Owning a Barbet

Are you wondering if the Barbet is the right dog for you?  If so, consider the following:

  1. Barbet are sporting dogs that require daily exercise and regular vigorous exercise.
  2. Barbet require regular, ongoing training.  They are smart dogs that are easy to train, but they need to be challenged.  If you do not provide it for them, they will likely find ways to occupy themselves (not necessarily in constructive ways).
  3. Barbet are great companions that don't do well when left alone for long periods of time on a regular basis.  If you plan to leave your dog home alone during the work day, the Barbet is NOT the right breed for you.
  4. Barbet are wooly dogs that require regular grooming.  Most owners brush their dogs 3+ times per week to minimize matting.  They need regular haircuts.
  5. Barbet become attached to their owners.  Are you prepared to commit to a dog that is expected to live 13 - 15 (or more) years?
  6. Barbet are generally considered "soft" dogs and respond best to consistency and training.  Harsh corrections are not for them.
