- The current Barbet standard was filed with the SCC in 2006.
- The Barbet is bred to hunt waterfowl and upland game. They can point, flush and retrieve.
- While no dog is "hypoallergenic", the Barbet is tolerated by many people with dog allergies.
- Napoleon was known to have Barbet.
- The Barbet's nose matches his coat.
- The Barbet contributed to the development of many breeds including the Bouvier des Flandres, Korthals Griffon, Bichon Frise, Briard, etc.
- In France during the 1800's rough haired gun dogs were called griffon or barbet.
